Free Admission on September 22, 2018 with a downloadable ticket.

JUNEAU – The Alaska State Museum will welcome special ticket holders on Saturday September 22, 2018 as part of the Smithsonian’s 14th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums. This special event represents a nationwide commitment to access, equality and inclusion at museums across the country.  Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s special free day, and this year even more museum-goers than ever before are anticipated.

The free museum tickets are available for download. The ticket provides general admission for two people at participating venues on September 22, 2018.  There is a limit of one ticket per email address. Find a list of participating museums online.

It’s a perfect time to visit the State Museum and view the summer exhibit, Titanic of the North: The 1918 Wreck of the S.S. Princess Sophia.  Also that afternoon author Mary Ehrlander will present a fascinating free lecture on the life of one of the most remarkable Alaskans aboard the ill-fated ship: Walter Harper.  The lecture on the Athabaskan mountaineer, climber and guide begins at 2 p.m.  Other 2018 Princess Sophia-related commemorative events are listed at http://www.rememberthesophia.org/calendar.html

Summer hours at the Museum are 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, seven days a week.  Summer admission prices are $12 for adults, but those age 18 and under admitted free.  Winter hours begin October 2, 2018, when the Museum will be open Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.  An annual pass that allows unlimited visits to the Alaska State Museum and the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka is available for $35.  Assistance is available for visitors who have special needs. Please contact Visitor Services at 465-2901 before the visit.
