Constitutions
Founding documents for state, federal, and some tribal governments.
Statutes
Laws enacted by legislatures
Regulations
Rules created by administrative agencies
Executive orders
Issued by presidents and governors, often relating to the management of executive agencies
Agency decisions
Decisions issued by government agencies about specific disputes.
Court opinions
A court's written explanation of its decision in a case. The body of law consisting of court decisions is sometimes referred to as common law.
Court rules
Rules describing how court proceedings are conducted.
Local ordinances
Laws adopted by governing bodies of local governments such as cities
Treaties
Bilateral or multilateral agreements between nations
Tribal law
Law through which tribes govern themselves. May consist of codes, court cases and other sources of law.
