Political cartoon of women in a boat navigating through ice, holding a banner that says, “Votes for Women.”

In 1913, suffragists walked from New York City to Washington, DC to join the Woman Suffrage Procession. Cartoonists compared the suffragists with Revolutionary War heroes. Suffragists too adopted arguments for liberty that the Founding Fathers had advanced. “Taxation without representation,” the Declaration of Independence, and more were used to focus attention on the injustices women suffered.
