TWINING

Mat—Western Red Cedar Bark

Attributed to the Tsimshian
ASM 2015-17-1

Cedar bark mats were used as place mats, floor coverings, and canoe sails. The design of this finely woven example is a series of nested boxes, laid out as a grid, with a raised lattice pattern on the diagonal, reminiscent of raven’s tail robes.
