UAF-2007-73. The Cut Benson Photographs of Galena Air Force Base consist of 58 images of Galena and Galena Air Force Base, Alaska; servicemen; African-American troops; toxic barrels; and hangars and aircraft.

2021-025. Roshier Creecy came to Alaska following the 1898 Klondike gold rush and became the first African American person to live and mine in the Koyukuk gold fields. His papers include correspondence, photographs, and other materials found in Creecy's cabin in Wiseman, Alaska.

This collection consists of materials relating to a 1964 Mount McKinley Expedition, which included the first African American person to climb Denali. The collection contains articles, diaries and publications describing the expedition through the individual viewpoints of seven climbing members and three non-climbing members. The collection also includes 523 color slides.

Lael Morgan was a journalist and founder of Epicenter Press. The collection includes material and research from a museum exhibit curated by Lael called “Miles and Miles,” about African-American veterans working on the ALCAN Highway.

AAF-10555. One story features Emma Avery, Emma Green, and Wilma Rutherford describing their experiences as Black women homesteading near Fairbanks.

mssHM 47577-47618. Michael Healy was born to an Irish father and a biracial mother in Georgia, and later became a captain in the U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service, which was the precursor to the Coast Guard. Though he identified primarily as White during his lifetime, he has since been recognized as the first known person of African descent to command a ship for the United States government. This collection contains papers of Captain. Healy (1839-1904) who commanded the U.S. Revenue Cutters "Corwin" and "Bear" off the Alaskan coast in the mid 1880s, and his family. Subjects include Alaska; the ships the "Bear" and the "Corwin"; the United States Revenue Cutter Service; and whalers and whaling.

The HistoryMakers is a project to document the Black experience in America through oral histories, as well as biographies, videos, and archival photography. The collections include interviews with Black Alaskans.
