Alaska Native Artists Awarded Solo Exhibitions at Sheldon Jackson Museum

Under a new temporary exhibition series initiative, the Sheldon Jackson Museum will be soliciting Alaska Native artists to apply for solo exhibitions. This year, the museum’s review committtee reviewed nearly a dozen submissions and portfolios from Alaska Native artists from across the state and selected two inidividuals to show their work. The first of this series of exhibitions in the Alaska Native Solo Show Exhibition Series will open in January 2021 and be up through mid-April of that year; the second exhibition will open in January 2022 and be up through mid-April of 2022.

The selected artists are:

• Peter Williams (Yup'ik): hunter, artist, and designer based in Sitka, AK.
• Allie High (Unangan, Tsimshian, and Haida): mixed media artist based in Eagle River who incorporates Northwest Coast designs on glass, wood, silkscreen prints, animal hides, and metal.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum was founded in 1887 to house an exceptional collection of Alaska Native ethnographic material. The Sheldon Jackson Museum and its collection were purchased by the State of Alaska to inspire human thought and artistic endeavor, to stimulate ethnographic research and to foster an awareness of, and an appreciation for, the enriching qualities of a multi-cultural existence.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. Winter admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for children 18 and under and Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum members and Alaska State Museum pass holders. For more information, call (907) 747-8981.
