Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum Annual Meeting

Dramatic clouds & sun behind him.Come to the Sheldon Jackson Museum at 1 pm on Saturday, February 15th for the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum's Annual Meeting! The Friends will host Sven Haakanson as guest speaker for this special event. He will be speaking about the masks collected by Alphonse Pinart in his lecture entitled "Reading between the lines of historical accounts written by A. Pinart in 1871-72."

is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington and Curator of North American Anthropology at Burke Museum. He served for 13 years as Executive Director of the Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak, Alaska. As a Native Sugpiaq from Kodiak, an archaeologist and artist, his straddles worlds in an effort to share, preserve and give contemporary meaning to Indigenous histories and traditions.

The Board of Directors will conduct its business meeting at 1 pm prior to Haakanson's 2 pm lecture. Just before the meeting, light refreshments will be served and people will have a chance to pay cash to participate in the Friends’ 50/50 raffle, a raffle in which the winner will take half the total cash from raffle ticket sales. The raffle is one of the Friends’ biggest fundraisers of the year and all proceeds go towards their work and mission to support the Sheldon Jackson Museum and its unique Alaska Native ethnographic collection through advocacy, acquisition, and educational programming.

There are currently several vacancies on the board and interested persons should contact friendsofsjm@gmail.com for details on how to apply to join this wonderful, active board of the oldest museum in Alaska! Voting on new board members will take place at this Annual Meeting.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. Admission will be waived during the Annual Meeting, but generally, winter admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for children 18 and under and Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum members and Alaska State Museum pass holders.
