Mitch Did This 3 Exhibit is open now through 4/3/2021.
“We in Juneau all have to fly a lot if we want to visit just about anywhere, and I like looking out the window at the ground and the shadows created by the clouds, and I had about five hours to think of a way to recreate that for a diorama before I touched down at my destination. ...”

The Alaska State Museum will reopen to the public on Tuesday, December 29 with a new exhibit by Juneau-based artist Mitch Watley. For Watley’s solo exhibition, he transforms everyday objects into complex dioramas often depicting futuristic landscapes. Sculpted figures inhabit these scenes navigating life in these other-worldly settings. Viewers will get lost in the details of these small sculptures that take upwards of a year to make.

The Museum will be open for visitors Tuesday – Thursday, December 29-31 from 12:00-4:00 and on Saturday January 2, from 12:00 – 4:00. The Museum and the facility will be closed on Friday January 1st in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. We strongly recommend visitors call to schedule and reserve a time for your visit, as the Museum will reopen at reduced capacity.

Beginning the week of January 4, the State Museum will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00 noon to 4 p.m.

For more information on how to plan your visit to the museum call Visitor Services at 465-2901 or visit museums.alaska.gov.

A person experiencing a disability who needs an accommodation for events hosted by the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum can contact the Division’s ADA coordinator at (907) 465-2912 a week in advance to make any necessary arrangements.
