Sheldon Jackson Museum Welcomes Artist-in-Residence Liz Chikayaasix̂ Morrow (Unangax̂)

Liz holding a print rollerSITKA –The Sheldon Jackson Museum and the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum are pleased to welcome the first artist in the 2025 Alaska Native Artist Residency Program, Liz Chikayaasix̂ Morrow.

Morrow will be in residence June 17–July 3. She will work on a large-scale linoleum relief print and will host several events: a relief printing class, a public steam roller printing event, and two artist talks. 

Artist Talk

Friday, June 20 at 2 pm
Sheldon Jackson Museum and on Zoom

Morrow will give a talk entitled, “Relief Printing as a Reflection of Traditional Indigenous Carving.” In her presentation, she will share about her relief printing work as a reflection of traditional indigenous carving. Morrow will also show images of carvings from her family and talk about her personal experience of being raised in Anchorage while feeling a disconnect from her ancestral heritage.

Intro to Relief Printing Class

Wednesday, June 25, 10 am-12 pm and 1-3 pm

Morrow will teach an Intro to Relief Printing Class. Students need to sign up in advance and should acquire some materials prior to the class.

Steam Roller Printing Event

Saturday, June 28, 9:30–11:30 am
753 Alice Loop in Sitka

Morrow will host a printing event where she'll use a steamroller and linoleum blocks to create some large prints. The general public is invited to witness the art making. Prints produced at the steamrolling event will be sold for fundraising purposes for the Friends of SJM during the last week and a half of the artist’s residency. Anyone interested in purchasing a print can view them at the museum and make a suggested donation (minimum amount set by the artist) to the Friends of the Sheldon Jackson Museum. 

Artist Talk

Wednesday, July 2 at 2:30 pm
Sheldon Jackson Museum and on Zoom

Morrow will give a Recap Talk to discuss the art she created in Sitka and her experience as an artist-in-residence.

Sheldon Jackson Museum summer hours are Monday–Friday, 9:30 am–4:30 pm, except holidays. Summer admission is $9 for adults and $8 for seniors. Visitors 18 and under are admitted free of charge. Assistance is available for visitors with special needs.
