Juneau – A large and marvelous creature-sculpture comes to the Alaska State Museum. March kicks off a marathon of drop-in crafting opportunities at the museum. A 30-foot-long wood framed structure depicting a North Pacific giant octopus currently resides in one of the temporary galleries. Come see her being built and help us craft the skin this First Friday, March 1, from 1 to 7. Drop-in for more crafting weekday afternoons, Tuesday through Friday, and Saturdays all day until March 16th.
Then sign-up at the museum for youth activities happening on March 23rd and 30th to help decorate a slew of suckers. Artist Tanna Peters and scientists Sherry Tamone and Riley Woodford along with Alaska State Museum staff will teach students about art, octopus, and the importance of recycling. The workshop runs on March 23 for ages 6 to 9 from 10am to noon and ages 9 to12 from 1 to 3pm. Then again on March 30 for ages 9 to 12 from 10am to noon and ages 6 to 9 from 1 to 3pm. Please call the Museum at 465-2901 to sign up. These youth activities programs are partially funded by the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenues.
Finally, on April 5, First Friday, come back for an eight-armed octopus opening. Wear a sea-life costume and “sea” the octopus installed in its new home at the Alaska State Museum Children’s Discovery Area! Opening reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Alaska State Library Archives and Museum.
