JUNEAU – Ken Coates, co-author of The Sinking of the Princess Sophia: Taking the North Down with Her, will share insights about the 1918 shipwreck, at the Father Andrew P. Kashevaroff State Library, Archives, and Museum on Thursday, September 13, at 5:30 pm. His talk will be recorded for later broadcast on 360 North.
This presentation is part of this year’s summer lecture series relating to the summer’s special exhibit, Titanic of the North: The 1918 Wreck of the S.S. Princess Sophia, at the Alaska State Museum. The final lecture in the series will be on Saturday, September 22, with author Mary Ehrlander, whose new book, Walter Harper: Alaska Native Son, profiles one of the victims of the Princess Sophia disaster. Ken Coates is Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan campus and Munk Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. He was named to the Royal Society of Canada in 2015. Ken was raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, and has long-standing professional and personal interests in Aboriginal rights, northern development, northern Canadian history, and technological innovation. Ken has written extensively on Aboriginal history, Indigenous-newcomer relations and post-secondary education. In 2015 his co-authored book From Treaty Peoples to Treaty Nation, A roadmap for all Canadians was shortlisted for the Donner Prize for Public Policy. Ken published #IdleNoMore and the Remaking of Canada, which was one of National Posts’ top 100 Canadian Political Books for 2015 and winner of the University of Saskatchewan Non-fiction Award. Ken received the Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations from the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business in 2017. In 1990 Ken co-wrote, along with his frequent co-author Bill Morrison, The Sinking of the Princess Sophia, Taking the North Down with Her.
