The Sheldon Jackson Museum is pleased to announce that artist-in-residence Abel Ryan (Tsimshian) has begun his residency at the museum. Ryan will be in residence at the museum and working in the gallery most days until July 20th. While here, he will teach a two-part drum making class on June 8th and June 15th and give a presentation on the carving of his first totem pole on Saturday, July 20th at 3pm. In addition to working in the museum gallery, Abel will be working with the museum’s partner, Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and teaching their middle and high school students.
Abel is a member of the Laxiboo Clan of Metlakatla. He studied Tsimshian Arts from Master Carver Jack Hudson in Metlakatla as a child and later went on to attend Sheldon Jackson College and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A wood carver and metal engraver, he enjoys making masks bowls, spoons, bracelets, rattles, earrings, pendants, and painting. Last year, a retrospective of Ryan’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Juneau Douglas City Museum. A full time artist who has been in residence many times at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, he currently lives in Juneau, AK.

Summer hours at the Sheldon Jackson Museum 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m daily. The museum is closed holidays. Summer admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors.
