JUNEAU – Local art educator Daniel Todd will lead a free mask activity for youth at the Father Andrew P. Kashevaroff State Library, Archives, and Museum on Saturday, April 28. The morning session, from 10:00 am to noon, is designed for children ages 6-9. The afternoon session, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, is geared for youth ages 9-12. Masks have been an important art form of human culture for 9,000 years. Our fascination with disguising one’s face can be seen in old traditions like Halloween. Using a papier-mâché base, students will have the opportunity to design and create a mask of their own using strong art elements, principles of design, and a variety of materials. Inspiration will be found by looking at the history and purposes of different cultures where mask making was important to the expression of the people.
This program is partially funded by the citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenues and is sponsored by the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum. Daniel Todd, originally from the Philadelphia area, has been living and working in Juneau for six years. Trained in Art Education at Moravian College, Daniel enjoys all aspects of creation, finding inspiration in the natural world. He works at The Canvas Studio and Gallery.
The Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum support free lifelong learning activities for Alaskans. The youth activity program is designed to provide young people with opportunities to work with professional artists to learn artistic techniques and engage with art, history, and the collections of the Library, Archives, and Museum.
