1964 Great Alaska Earthquake primary source collections

Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964

March 27, 2014 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964. To commemorate the event, a number of Alaskan repositories came together to create this guide to archival resources related to the earthquake.

The Repositories tab connects you to a number of collections, digital and hard copy, that can be found in Alaskan libraries, archives, museums and other institutions. The Photos tab takes you to over 2200 photographs, audio recordings, and moving image recordings related to the earthquake – many were made available in digital form for the first time as a part of the creation of this project.

About this guide

This project was initiated by the Archives and Special Collections, Consortium Library, University of Alaska Anchorage. Funding was provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services via the Alaska State Library, through an Interlibrary Cooperation Grant awarded in June 2012.

Project goals:

  1. To expand access to primary source materials about the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964.
  2. To provide a collaborative website that can act as a starting point for individuals interested in researching the earthquake.

Grant application support was provided by The Valdez Museum, The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, The Alaska Resources Library and Information Service (ARLIS), Seward Community Library and the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA).
