JUNEAU – The Alaska State Archives and Library will host an Open House on Alaska Day, October 18, from 10 am – 4 pm.  Have you ever wondered how to find information about a local person or event, or are you just curious about what’s in the library and archives? Have you been meaning to start researching for your great Alaskan novel? Do you have your own family archive that you don’t know how to care for? This is your chance to find out.  Come check out unique and rarely seen items from collections, find out how the pros preserve old photos, letters, and diaries through proper storage and digitization, peruse Alaska newspaper microfilm, and try out some local history and genealogy databases.

The Alaska State Museum will also be open from 10 am – 4 pm. Discounted winter admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and free for people 18 years and younger, ASM pass-holders, active duty military, and members of the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum.

The Store at the APK will host an Alaska Literary Festival featuring renowned writers from around Southeast. Susi Gregg Fowler and illustrator Jim Fowler, Ishmael Hope, John Straley, and Heather Lende will briefly read, talk about their work, and answer questions from the audience beginning at 1:00 pm. A book signing with all of the literary guests will take place in front of the Store at the APK following the presentation.

The Alaska Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums collects, organizes, preserves, and makes accessible materials that document the history of Alaska, provides access to government information for state agencies and other researchers, and promotes the development of libraries, archives, and museums statewide for the benefit of all Alaskans.
