Jessica Towns (Alutiiq/Sugpiaq) Earring Making Class is January 22 on Zoom

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum invite the public to attend events in the Share Your Culture/Share Your Research Winter Public Program Series. There are four remaining public programs, including artist talks, a storytelling event, an earring making class, and Chilkat weaving demonstrations. All of the events will be available on Zoom. Earring Making Class

January 22, 2-2:45 pm on Zoom

The next Winter Series event will be an earring making class with Jessica Towns (Alutiiq/Sugpiaq).

Join Towns and make a pair of beaded earrings based on an ancestral pair from Ugashik in the Smithsonian Museum’s collection. 

Materials ListDangly earrings with gold, white, and dark blue beads Make earrings similar to those pictured above. (Students may make a slightly simpler version and will choose their own colors.)

The class is free, but students need the following materials to participate. Please acquire these from your local bead shop or online before the class:

  • 2x 4mm closed jump rings 
  • 2x earhooks 
  • 1x hank of 11/0 Toho seed beads
  • 6x 10mm beads
  • 8x 6mm beads
  • 12x 4mm beads
  • No 11 Color Eyes Needles
  • Nymo D Thread

The remaining Winter Series events will also be held on Zoom. They all run 30-45 minutes and occur on Saturdays:

  • February 5, 2 pm: Artist Talk and Weaving Demonstration with Laine Rinehart (Tlingit)
  • March 12, 2 pm: Storytelling Event with Multimedia Artist Allison Akootchook Warden (Inupiaq)
  • March 26, 3 pm: Chilkat Weaving Demonstration and “Call to Weavers” with Lily Hope (Tlingit)

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday,10 am-4 pm and is closed holidays. Winter admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and free for ages 18 and under and active duty military and their families (with an ID).
