Subject Area Guidelines
The project coordinator will send out a call for sites at least a week before Advisory Group meetings. They'll be added to the meeting agenda, which will be sent out at least two days prior to the meetings. Discussion and voting on sites will occur during meetings.
Review existing links in your area.
The first thing to do is make sure the existing links in your subject area are working. Go to your subject area at least once a month and try them. Also check to see that the links take you where you really want to go. Sometimes additional web pages are added between the home page and good information. We want the SLED link to take people to the most efficient starting page. Do check to see if the site creator can be identified or if a link to the site's home page can be made from the starting page you choose. Occasionally, check the link to see that it is being updated regularly. Stale pages with dysfunctional maintenance records may need to be removed. Subject specialists can update links in their areas on their own. Where input from others is wanted, forward the link to the project coordinator to be placed on the agenda.
Find new resources in your subject area.
The second thing is to improve the subject area. As you review the area you will become aware of its strengths and weaknesses. Through web searching, informal discussions with friends or colleagues, professional reading or events or personal research, you often find good sites for SLED. Keep in mind that we want to stay lean and agile. Don't feel you need to add sites just to add them. Do select high quality Alaska-related sites that may be hard to find.
