Changes to the Continuing Education (CE) Grant
The Alaska State Library has had to make the following changes to the CE grants for FY2020 due to impact of the State of Alaska budget.
- Each public library outlet is eligible to apply for one (1) CE grant per fiscal year.
- This CE grant may be used by the Library Director or any library staff member designated by the Library Director, for a broad range of pertinent continuing education opportunities
- Each CE grant, whether for in-state or out-of-state travel, will be reimbursed up to $1,250.00
- There are a limited number of CE grants available. Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

Alaska Statewide Summer Reading Program Change
The Alaska State Library has made the decision to not renew its statewide membership with the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). The Alaska State Library has signed an MOU and joined iREAD, a nonprofit reading program developed by the Illinois Library Association, which has been providing high quality, low-cost statewide summer reading programs for 37 years. The benefits of participating in iREAD include their proactive outreach to librarians and their commitment to supporting public libraries. Revenue generated through the sale of iREAD summer reading merchandise supports libraries
What changes?
- iREAD upcoming themes
- 2020 Dig Deeper: Read, Investigate, Discover
- 2021 Reading Colors Your World
- Executive staff from iREAD will attend the annual Alaska Library Association Conference to share information about the program and solicit feedback from Alaska librarians on upcoming summer reading themes.
- The Alaska Library Association has an opportunity to receive a commission when individual public libraries purchase additional iREAD summer reading materials.
What stays the same?
Public libraries wanting to participate in the Alaska Statewide Summer Reading Program will continue to register online. Participating libraries will continue to receive a summer reading manual loaded on a USB, a summer reading welcome letter and an iREAD catalog of incentives in the fall. In the spring a Summer Reading 101 webinar will be scheduled to introduce participants to the theme and possible programming ideas. Libraries participating in the Statewide Summer Reading program will also continue to receive a summer reading starter kit mailed directly to their library. Alaska librarians will also be able to submit ideas for game, programs, crafts and suggested bibliographies that support the upcoming the 2021 summer reading theme to iREAD.
