Alaska Digital Stewardship Intensive
Starting on January 8, 2019 Alaska State Library, Archive and Museum staff will be coordinating an Alaska Digital Stewardship Training Intensive. The Alaska Digital Stewardship Training Intensive is free and open to any staff or volunteer working in a collecting institution, such as a library, archive or museum.
The Sustainable Heritage Network's Digital Stewardship Curriculum created by the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation at Washington State University is designed to introduce staff in small cultural institutions to all aspects of the digital stewardship lifecycle. Participants will have twelve weeks to work through the four online modules. The first module focuses on creating collection development policies, bringing collections into your institution and setting up sustainable digital projects. The second module covers organization and management of collections, description, and digitizing planning and procedures. The third module will cover digital preservation, creating a digital preservation plan and physical preservation. The fourth and final module will cover access and use policies, rights management and online access platforms.
Participants are also invited to attend a series of virtual lectures and discussions led by experience facilitators from Alaska. Presenters will also be available to serve as mentors and guides. The 12 week training will intersect with the Alaska Library Association conference to be held in Juneau, February 28-March 3, 2019.
The deadline to register for the Alaska Digital Stewardship Intensive is December 21, 2018.
Alaska Library Association Conference in Juneau
The Alaska Library Association Conference is the largest annual continuing education event for librarians in Alaska. This year the AkLA conference will be held February 28-March 3rd in Juneau. Libraries 24/7 is this year's conference theme, which speaks to the strides libraries are making to provide patrons with access to library resources whenever they need them.
Whether you are new to libraries or have several years of librarianship under your belt, the annual library conference is an opportunity to learn, share and network. The Alaska State Library supports public librarians' attendance to the AkLA Conference by providing each public library outlet with two Continuing Education (CE) grants. Visit the Grants for Alaska Libraries and Schools for CE grant eligibility requirements.
Organizing a seamless annual library conference is no small feat. Conference Chair, Freya Anderson and her group of dedicated volunteers are hard at work soliciting vendors, developing the program and activities, securing presenters and ensuring the catering, technology and accommodations are in place.

3 Cities Tour: Engaging Millennials in Alaska’s Libraries
Changes in age demographics are leading to challenges in recruiting people to work in libraries and serve on library boards in Alaska. Librarians are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit younger people, specifically Millennials, to fill board vacancies created by the large number of older volunteers retiring from public service. Older library board members are mainly compromised of baby boomers, people born between 1946 through 1964. There are over 40 million Americans age 65 and older, and they make up 13 percent of the population. In 2030, all of the baby boomers will have passed the age of 65.
Jenny Emanual Taylor, author of Millennial Librarians: Who They are and How They are Different from the Rest of Us, will facilitate three half-day workshops in Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks.
These three workshops will be scheduled from 9 am to 1 pm on the following dates and locations:
- May 13, 2019-Juneau, Andrew P. Kashevaroff building
- May 15, 2019-Anchorage, UAA/APU Consortium Library
- May 17th, 2019-Fairbanks, Noel Wien Public Library
At the conclusion of the workshop participants will:
-
Understand the basic characteristics of the Millennial generation
-
Understand what leads Millennials towards engagement with libraries
-
Gain knowledge of the motivations among Millennials to benefit society, and in turn, libraries
-
Learn how to engage and retain Millennials and develop a culture that aligns with their values
-
Develop concrete actions to bring Millennials into their library, both as passive users and active participants
Workshop participants will leave with a plan for engaging Millennials in library services.
