Summer Reading 101: A Universe of Stories
This year’s Statewide Summer Reading Program is out of this world! On February 14th at 11:00 we will be offering Summer Reading 101: A Universe of Stories. During this webinar we will explore this year's exciting summer reading theme, A Universe of Stories and share information about the Statewide Summer Library program. The role a summer reading program can play in stopping summer learning loss, share information about the upcoming NASA Stem Workshop that will be held in Anchorage and highlight some summer reading programing ideas.
Show your library a little love by adding it to Library Planet, a crowd source travel guide for libraries of the world. When Christian Lauersen, one of the creators of Library Planet was recently interviewed on the Circulating Ideas podcast he specifically mentioned how he would like to have some Alaska libraries highlighted on the site. Adding your library to Library Planet is easy. Simply send an email with some text describing your library to travellibraryplanet@gmail.com and be sure to include photos.
Visualizing Funding for Libraries
Once in a while you stumble upon an online tool that is so easy to use and so useful that you want to share it with everyone you meet. The Visualizing Funding for Libraries Data Tool developed by the Foundation Center in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is an amazingly useful tool for librarians or library board members who are involved in grant writing. One of the most difficult things about writing a grant is finding the “right” potential funder for your project. The right funder not only has a history of funding libraries in Alaska but also supports projects that align with libraries.
The Visualizing Funding for Libraries Data Tool allows you to search for grants awarded to libraries by state and year. The search results provide you with information on what libraries received grants, who the grant funders were and what sort of grant projects they funded.
The tool provides contact information, mission and financial data for each grant funder. Recipient information includes a profile, contact information and a list of all the grants they have received going back to 2006. Grant details include the funder, recipient, total awarded, year awarded and a grant description. Finding the "right" funder for your library grant project has never been easier.
Grants, grants, and more grants
Each year, the Alaska State Library offers Interlibrary Cooperation Grants (ILC) to support library programs or projects that have a direct impact on library users. Libraries of all types (academic, public, school and special) are encouraged to apply.
ILC grant awards vary between $500.00 to over $50,000.00 and have supported a variety of projects (e.g. reading incentive programs, library catalog migrations and/or automation upgrades and digitization projects). The deadline to apply for an (ILC) grant is April 1st 2019.
The Grant and Funding website developed by Follett contains a useful link to a 137 page document listing grant opportunities in 33 different subject areas. While a large number of the grant opportunities are geared towards schools, there are some grant opportunities for libraries. Below are a selection of grant opportunities from the Follett list that non-profits, such as Friends of the Library with 501(c) (3) status would be eligible to apply for.
