TABLE OF CONTENTS

New Year brings a new look and feel to the CE Newsletter

The initial publication of the CE Newsletter was on July 2014. Those early newsletters featured a question and answer format and the standard Webinar Picks and Events Calendar.   Over the years, the CE Newsletter has evolved into a useful and efficient communication tool for broadly sharing information on upcoming workshops, webinars and grants. The newsletter has also served as an online platform for introducing librarians to relevant articles on a wide variety of CE topics.

In order to better serve you, we have transformed the CE Newsletter from a static Publisher publication to a blog format which we believe improves the readability, findability and shareability of the content.

Continuing Education Survey

What types of library workshops and regional training events would you like to see in the near future?

Library Development is conducting a statewide continuing education needs survey for directors and staff from all types of libraries. The information from this survey will be used to develop future library workshops and programs.  If you work in an Alaska library we would like to hear from you.

The survey is open through January 8, 2018.

Disaster Information Resource Guide for Libraries

Many of you may have seen the Anchorage Daily News article published on Wednesday, December 13th, 2017 about the flooding that damaged books and records in the Loussac Library’s historic Alaska Collection.  By definition, a disaster is a sudden event that causes a great deal of damage to people and or materials. To help librarians prepare for and quickly respond to disasters, the Alaska State Library has created the online Disaster Information Resource guide, with links to library, archive and museum emergency response resources.

Following the news of the recent flooding at the Loussac Library, the Disaster Information Resource guide has been reviewed and updated. The list of resources under the heading Library, Archive & Museum Emergency Response Resources has been expanded to include a wider variety of resources that describe and demonstrate how to handle wet materials.

Should a disaster strike and library staff need to talk to someone with firsthand experience overseeing an emergency collection response, Alaska State Museum staff member Scott Carrlee, Curator of Museum Services  is available to answer questions and provide that assistance.

Scott Carrlee helped lead the 2009 the Alaska State Library’s emergency response when disaster struck the Alaska State Archives.  While a contractor was repairing the roof of the Alaska State Archives water entered the vault affecting approximately 500 boxes of archival material. Scott has also created the Disaster Preparedness for Individuals and Families, an online list of resources designed to help people properly care for photographs, artwork, important records, historical books and cultural artifacts before and after a disaster.

Hopefully, your library will never experience a disaster. If it does, the Alaska State Library is here to help.

Honoring Alaska Native Cultural Heritage: Continuing Education for Alaska's Community and Tribal Libraries

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded the Alaska Library Network funds for a two year project called Honoring Alaska Native Cultural Heritage: Continuing Education for Alaska’s Community and Tribal Libraries. The project will feature a week long workshop in Fairbanks, April 23 – 27, 2018 for staff members from public and tribal libraries that serve Alaska Native populations or have significant Alaska Native materials collections.

Training will prepare participants to craft their libraries to fit their communities and to work with local and regional agencies to enhance Alaska Native cultural activities and collections. Scholarships that cover travel and lodging and food will be available. Applications will soon be available. Attendees at this workshop will qualify to apply for a limited number of week long, on-site visits by specialists to assist or advise with a cultural heritage project at your library.  Additional information on Honoring Alaska Native Cultural Heritage may be found on the (ANLAMS) Alaska Native Libraries, Archives, and Museums Summit webpage http://library.alaska.gov/dev/anlams.html

Public Librarians' Chat: Mental Health Initiative

Our guest presenter this month is Jeremy Wilson, Project Coordinator for California State Library's Mental Health Initiative.  The goal of California's Mental Health Initiative is to provide every library staff member in the state with the opportunity to learn how to work effectively with patrons affected by mental illness. During the webinar Jeremy will share information on the events or trends in libraries that led the California State Library to embark on the Mental Health Initiative. He will also share information about his role in developing a series of 8 videos that address different aspects of mental health illness and demonstrate how library staff can best respond.  During the webinar, we will discuss how librarians in Alaska can use the mental health videos with their staff and volunteers and share Alaska specific mental health resources available to librarians and the public.
