Thank you, thank you!

A great big thank you to everyone who volunteered, presented or provided critical behind the scenes support during the Alaska Library Association Conference.  You are a big reason this year’s AkLA Conference was so successful!

Congratulations Scholarship & Conference Award Winners

Each year, the Alaska Library Association gives a $4000.00 General Graduate Library Studies Scholarship to worthy students pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master’s Degree in Library and Information studies and encourages graduates to return to Alaska to work in professional library positions. The amount of the scholarship is $4000.00

This year, the AkLA Scholarship Committee selected two recipients for the General Graduate Studies scholarship: Shelly B. Andersen and Katja Wolfe.

Shelly is a Guidance Counselor at Romig Middle School in Anchorage where she works collaboratively with staff, students and families to meet each student’s individual educational needs. After 20 years in the Anchorage School District, Shelly is ready for a new challenge-becoming a school librarian and is working on her MLIS from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Katja is the Assistant City Librarian at the Joyce K. Carver Memorial Soldotna Public Library. She has over ten years of experience as both a library director of a small rural library and an assistant director of a medium-sized library. Katja is pursuing an MLIS from San Jose State University because the people in her life that she considers her mentors have encouraged her to take this next step in her professional development.

The School Librarian Jo Morse Scholarship provides financial assistance to worthy students pursuing graduate studies leading to a library media specialist or a school librarian certificate and also encourages graduates to return to Alaska to work in professional school library positions.

This year the AkLA Scholarship Committee selected Eileen Mock to receive the Jo Morse Scholarship.

Eileen is a veteran educator with seventeen years of teaching experience and a passion for libraries. When she learned that the school librarian at her school was retiring, she immediately enrolled in the MLIS program at the University of Central Missouri.  She is now a first year school librarian at the Delta Greely School District and is living the dream!

The Alaska Library Association also supports a Conference Attendance Award of up to a $1000.00 for a rural library staff member or library volunteer to attend the AkLA annual conference. The conference attendance award is for a library staff member or library volunteer working in a library in the region where the conference is being held.

This year’s recipient of the Conference Attendance Award is William Ortiz.  William is a Library Aide at the Sitka Public Library and is currently pursuing an MLIS from San Jose State University.  William has worked as a STEM teacher to adult inmates and is also interested in prison librarianship.
