Infopeople Continuing Education Opportunity

There are twelve (12) Infopeople course seats remaining! The Alaska State Library purchased a block of twenty-five (25) seats to Infopeople online instructor-led training sessions which may be used by any Alaska library staff member during the 2019-2020 fiscal year.  These course seats will be distributed in an equitable manner to ensure that participants from libraries of all sizes, all types and in all regions of the State are represented. Five seats will be reserved for each of Alaska’s five recognized regions: Far North, Interior, Southwest, Southcentral and Southeast.

To register for one of the remaining course seats, you will need to complete the online application form.  Once your application has been approved, the Public Library Coordinator will register you for your Infopeople course, and you will receive an email confirmation that you have been registered for your Infopeople course.

You will be required to complete an evaluation form for the Alaska State Library at the conclusion of your Infopeople course.

A list of Infopeople training courses is available at https://infopeople.org/training

Free Online Guidebook on Managing and Supervising Volunteers

For many rural Alaska libraries, volunteer help is vital. These libraries depend on a dedicated group of volunteers to order and process materials, deliver programs, write grants and maintain the facility. Recruiting and retaining volunteers in small rural communities is challenging.   Take Root: Volunteer Management Guidebook developed by the Corporation for National & Community Service and the HandsOn Network, and available from the Points of Light website, is a user-friendly and helpful resource that includes strategies for recruiting, retaining and recognizing volunteers.

Who's Feeding Your the News?

NewsGuard Webinar

On October 1st at 11:00 am, Anna-Sophie Harling of NewsGuard will share information about her organization's efforts to fight false news, misinformation and disinformation. NewsGuard is a non-profit organization comprised of experienced journalists  who volunteer to assess news websites based on nine criteria for credibility and transparency. Each evaluated news website receives a "nutrition label"  that explains who is behind the website and how it was rated.  NewsGuard is providing libraries with free browser extensions which may be used on their public library computers. Research has shown that when members of the public are provided a news source rating tool they were less likely to share false news, misinformation and disinformation.

Register for this webinar if you would like to receive an email reminder and  information sheet prior to the webinar.
