Introduction

The Honoring Alaska Native Heritage project features presentations on topics of interest to tribal librarians and librarians who serve significant Alaska Native communities. This project was made possible with a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Alaska Library Network.

Professional Development

Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) [39.18)

ATALM is an organization that sponsors annual gatherings of Native cultural institutions and is dedicated to the idea that tribal sovereignty implies control of its own cultural resources and heritage. This session shows the wide range of ATALM’s activities and includes the testimonials of three Alaskan librarians on the value of attending the ATALM conference.

Tribal E-Rate Program [40:32]

An introduction to the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) that administers the E-Rate program to helps schools and libraries including tribal libraries to obtain discounts up to 90% for eligible internet access and related services and equipment. UAF’s Oral History Collection - [1:24:37]

Leslie McCartney, associate professor at UAF, introduces the Oral History Collection of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collection and Archives University of Alaska Fairbanks and description a project with the Aqqaluk Trust of the NANA Corporation for which the outcome was shaped by elders and highlights the restoration of rare Unangan materials by the Northeast Document Conservation Center and the history that they unfolded. Work with the Tribal Council of Kaltag exemplifies respectful curation of sensitive cultural materials.
