Alaska Book Week October 6-12, 2019 logo

Alaska Book Week

Alaska Book Week is an annual statewide celebration of all the ways we appreciate books. Alaska Book Week features readings, panel discussions, lectures, and youth activities.  Alaska book week will be held October 6-12, 2019 with some activities scheduled as early as October 3rd.  A complete schedule of Alaska Book Week events is available online.

If your library is planning on hosting an Alaska Book Week event and you would like to add it to the list of the statewide scheduled events contact Trish Jenkins at akbookweek@gmail.com

One way to participate in the Alaska Book Week is to create a book display highlighting Alaska authors.  Freya Anderson's bibliography Books by Alaska Native authors may be a helpful resource to libraries wanting to highlight Alaska Native authors.

Alaska History Day

Public librarians interested in supporting education and promoting student research, thinking and presentation skills may want to consider serving an Alaska History Day mentor.

Alaska History Day is the state affiliate of the National History Day® (NHD), a yearlong competition for students in grades 6-12.  Students work individually or in small groups to choose a topic that relates to an annual theme, research the topic, and then develop their research into one of five presentation categories:

  • website
  • performance
  • documentary film
  • exhibit
  • research paper

Alaska Humanities Forum works with statewide partner agencies and volunteer judges to hold local and statewide contests in the spring from which students advance to participate in NHD's national contest in the Washington, DC area each June. Hundreds of Alaskan students have participated in Alaska History Day and gone on to compete at the national level. The theme for the 2020 National History Day Contest is Breaking Barriers in History.

For more information on how you or your library can support Alaska History Day contact Amanda Dale adale@akhf.org
