In general, publications of the State of Alaska are protected by copyright. Copyright ownership may rest with the State of Alaska, or, in some cases, another individual or entity which creates a publication on behalf of the State.
Although copyright law generally applies to Alaska State publications, certain publications may be in the public domain. In addition, under AS 40.25.110, "unless specifically provided otherwise, public records of all public agencies" are open to inspection and copying.
The Alaska State Library collects, preserves, and provides access to State Publications under Alaska Statute 14.56, the "State Library Distribution and Data Access Center."
The copyright law of the United States [Title 17, United States Code] governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials, including download of an electronic copy of a State publication. Any fair use, as defined by copyright law, is acceptable.
Permission to reproduce a State publication may be obtained in writing from the Office of the Governor.
